Sheffield is a brilliant place to live and work. As England's fourth largest city, it has all the facilities and attractions you would expect to find in a major city and more. From theatre to football, countryside to clubbing, it's all here. One of the great things about Sheffield is that, despite being a major city, it is compact, welcoming and accessible.

Work in Sheffield

Sheffield is historically one of the major manufacturing hubs of Great Britain. Famed for its steelworks and coal mining, Sheffield has a proud industrial heritage. The city has moved on from its industrial past and now has a large public sector work force, and a thriving private sector which regularly recruits for customer service, sales, IT and administration jobs amongst many others. Sheffield jobs are mainly to be found in the public service, retail and service industries.

Sheffield has a slightly higher percentage of job seekers in relation to available vacancies than the UK average. The major employers are public sector organisations such as Sheffield City Council, The University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University, NHS Sheffield and Sheffield City College. Office, teaching and healthcare jobs are all common. Meadowhall Shopping Centre, Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre and further afield the Lakeside Shopping Centre and Frenchgate Shopping Centre in Doncaster are all major providers of jobs in retail in South Yorkshire. The service industry also employs many people, with hospitality, entertainment and leisure providing employment throughout the city. St. Paul's Hotel and Jury's Inn provide luxury accommodation in the city centre, with Premier Inn and Ibis offering a more affordable night's stay. Sheffield International Venues owns almost all leisure and fitness facilities in Sheffield including Ponds Forge International Sports Centre and Ice Sheffield.

Transport

Sheffield is well served by the M1 Motorway, running to the east of the city with a direct link at junction 33 (The Parkway) into the centre of town. Travel is easy from Manchester using the A57 or A616.

Parking and navigating in Sheffield city centre is a fine art – we won't lie! Even experienced motorists can encounter problems with the notorious one way system. Away from the city centre, things do get much easier. Meadowhall Shopping Centre offers free parking and easy access from the M1 motorway (junction 34).

Wherever you want to work in Sheffield, there will be a transport link. Sheffield's public transport system is one of the best in the country. An extensive tram network linking all the major areas, a bus service covering the entire South Yorkshire region, and rail links from across the country mean that Sheffield is certainly well connected!

Places to live

The population in the Sheffield area has grown almost consistently in the last 100 years. With everything from high-rise city apartments to country cottages, there's a lot to choose from. Different areas popular with families, students, young professionals, commuters - so it's worth doing some research on which area will suit you before moving!

Popular areas with students include Broomhill, Crookes, Hunters Bar and Ecclesall Road. Many of these students stay to work in Sheffield after they have finished studying. Nether Edge, Millhouses, Fulwood, Ranmoor, Dore and Totley are lovely, leafy suburban areas where many of Sheffield high-earners reside. Easy access to the M1 makes Woodhouse a very popular place for commuters. Hillsborough and Walkley's proximity to A6102 mean that they are popular with commuters to Manchester.

City centre living has seen a real boon is recent years, with many high-rise, high-spec apartment blocks populating the skyline of the centre. Further out of Sheffield there are the more rural areas such as Stocksbridge, Grenoside and Dronfield offering village life and outdoor pursuits.

Entertainment

Sheffield has an abundance of entertainment and cultural activities including award-winning theatres, museums and galleries, a variety of live music venues and nightclubs, and a great range of spectator and participation sports.

From the Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham to the Peace Gardens in the City Centre, to Kelham Island Brewery or the breathtaking beauty of the nearby Peak District, Sheffield offers a wealth of landmarks and places of interest to suit everyone.

Art Galleries and Museums

Sheffield offers the Mappin Art Gallery, Graves Art Gallery and the more modern Millennium Galleries. Mappin Art Gallery is home to the city's collection which dates from 16th to 19th Century. It is also the region's leading venue for cutting edge contemporary art. Graves Art Gallery is home to an outstanding collection of British and European Modern Art, including works by famous artists such as Matisse, Picasso and Cezanne, and a range of touring exhibitions. Millenium Galleries has an inspiring range of visual arts, craft and design.

Weston Park Museum hosts many interactive and exciting exhibits for children and adults alike. The city's amazing collection of treasures and artefacts are brought to life by fascinating histories, incredible facts and hands-on interactives. Bishops' House is the oldest timber framed house in Sheffield and provides a brilliant snapshot of what life was like in a small English domestic house in the 16th and 17th centuries. South Yorkshire has a wealth of museums dedicated to its industrial heritage including Kelham Island Museum and Magna Science Adventure Centre.

Cinema, bowling, ice skating

There are a few large chain cinemas in Sheffield, including Odeon in the city centre, Vue at Meadowhall and Cineworld at the Valley Centertainment Leisure Park. Fans of bowling can visit Hollywood Bowling, also at Valley Centertainment Leisure Park. Ice Sheffield is an amaxing winter sports complex offering ice skating, ice hockey and curling. Sheffield also has its very own ski village, offering skiing, snowboarding, an adventure playground and quad biking facilities. Sheffield ski village also has its own bowling alley.

Restaurants and bars

Sheffield boasts an abundance of diverse and exciting restaurants, representing cuisine from all corners of the globe. French, Italian, Greek, Ethiopian, Bengalese, Chinese, Cantonese, Thai, Turkish, Lebanese, Indian, Moroccan, Japanese - and much more! The city centre is full of places to eat, London Road and Ecclesall Road are also a restaurant hotspots. The city centre, Ecclesall Road and Broomhill are full of places for a good drink. From posh wine bars to studenty pubs and everything in between, you can't go far in Sheffield without stumbling upon a nice watering hole or two! Real Ale is thriving in Sheffield, with the Campaign for Real Ale endorsing several pubs. The Devonshire Cat, the Fat Cat, The Sheffield Tap and the Kelham Island Brewery are definite stops on any Real Ale pub crawl here.

Sport & Fitness

Sheffield International Venues incorporates many gym, swimming and fitness facilities in the city. From Hillsborough Leisure Centre to Ice Sheffield and Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, there are a lot of places to get fit in Sheffield. Not to mention the many parks and open areas to go walking in - Sheffield Botanical Gardens, Weston Park, Hillsborough Park and Millhouses Park are just a few of the lovely green spaces in Sheffield. For spectators, Sheffield Wenesday FC play at the Hillsborough Stadium and Sheffield United FC play at Bramall Lane. Rotherham United play at Don Valley Stadium. The Sheffield Steelers ice hockey team have a massive local following and play at Ice Sheffield.
