JOB TITLE: Care Assistant
LOCATION: Sheffield
REPORTING TO: Senior Carer/Care Co-ordinator
LEVEL: A

Salary:


  • 8am to 8pm Mon – Fri Perm Contract £6.00 per hour. Casual Contract £6.67 per hour


  • Evenings and Weekend Perm Contract £7.20 per hour. Casual Contract £8.00 per hour


  • Bank Holidays Perm Contract £12.00 per hour. Casual Contract £13.34 per hour


  • Additional 25p per hour for NVQ qualification from 1 April 2008


  • Holiday Entitlement 24 days on commencement increasing with service.


  • Company Pension Available to all employees.


  • Vacancy location: Sheffield Area


  • A full driving licence and own transport is desirable.


  • All your training courses and training time are paid. Certificates are issued for each training course attended.

1. Main Purpose of Job

To provide assistance with personal care and other daily living tasks to Disabled and older people within their own homes.

To work with each individual service user to maximise their independence and choice.

2. Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • To undertake personal care and daily living tasks as agreed with the service user, their family and professionals involved with the individual service plan.


  • To work in ways that promote Leonard Cheshire Disability core values.


  • To work at all times within the policies and procedures of Leonard Cheshire Disability including health and safety and confidentiality.


  • To provide service users with opportunities to express their preference as to the way that care tasks are carried out.


  • To develop and maintain professional working relationships with service users and work colleagues from a wide variety of backgrounds.


  • To communicate regularly with your immediate supervisor, in particular regarding changes in the service users condition or circumstances.


  • To use the services’ on-call system in accordance with the service guidance.


  • To attend training, including induction training, team meetings and individual supervision sessions as required.


  • To complete documentation, including service user records and timesheets.


  • To undertake any other reasonable duties requested.


  • Care Assistants must not undertake any function which requires a nursing qualification unless training and delegation has been agreed in accordance with Leonard Cheshire Disability policies and procedures.



    • A day in the life of......

    Pat, a Care Assistant at Wiltshire Care at Home Service

    My name is Pat Peacock. I have worked as a care assistant for Leonard Cheshire for almost 3 years. I came to Leonard Cheshire after being a florist for 34 years. To give you a flavour of my work I thought I would tell you about one of my working days.

    Today I am working in the morning only and I have 5 clients today. My first client lives about 5 miles away from home, so an early start. Not all staff work the same hours and times as I do. Most of our work is in the morning, assisting people to get up, and in the evening, helping people back into bed.

    8:30am – I arrive at my first client. This lady has short-term memory loss and attends a day centre. Before she goes I make sure she has her breakfast and her medication and inhalers. This lady has a good sense of humour and always asks if we can go out for the day to the coast. I make sure she has her spare inhaler, paper, and keys all in her bag. With her walking stick in hand she leaves for the day centre. Time is 9:30am.

    9:45am – My next client is about 6 miles away. Will need to “double up” with another Leonard Cheshire care assistant because this client needs to use a hoist to get out of bed. I have been going to this lady for almost 3 years.

    10.45am – My next client is very ill and needs help with personal care and dressing. Usually she has a shower, but she’s not feeling too special today, so she chooses to have a strip wash instead. I always make her a hot drink and have a chat with her before I go. This lady used to be a wonderful artist and has some lovely pictures and paintings on her bedroom walls. She is very interesting to talk to. I only go to her on cover work these days, when her regular care assistant is away. I do miss going to her and I will miss her if anything happens to her.

    12 noon – My next client lives about 4 miles away and is 92 years old. She lives on her own in a warden controlled bungalow. We go in to help with personal care Every thing was going fine until her bird decided to let itself out if its cage. It took us 10 minutes to catch it and we both ended up laughing. All put to rights, and I made sure she was safe when I left.

    It’s time to go home. It’s been a long morning, but enjoyable. A smile and a cheerful word and willingness to listen goes a long way which makes it all worth while. And to think I’ve got to do it all again tomorrow.

    It is the most rewarding job I have been in and I hope I will be caring for many more years to come.
